The In-School Mentoring Program is:

  • An opportunity for children in grades 3 to 5 to benefit from
a one-to-one relationship with a caring, reliable volunteer.
  • A joint program of Big Brothers Big Sisters and participating elementary schools

How it Works:

  • Each volunteer (Big Buddy) becomes a special friend to one child
    (Little Buddy).
  • The Mentor (Big Buddy) visits the Little Buddy for one hour a week.
  • Visits happen during school hours, on school property, but outside
    the classroom.
Activities are of interest to both the Big and Little Buddy, and could include sports, reading, drawing, games, building, baking, computers, etc.

Benefits for Volunteers:

  • A sense of purpose.
  • Increased understanding and knowledge.
  • A little relaxation and fun in your week.
  • Experience for your resume.
  • Making a difference in your community.

Benefits to Children:

All children need to feel valued. Having a special friend who listens and spends quality time gives children a sense of worth.  Other benefits may include:

  • Greater self-confidence.
  • More comfort in making friends.
  • Increased motivation and school attendance.
  • Better academic performance
